Simon Vansteenwinckel. Wuhan Radiography

Simon Vansteenwinckel was born in Brussels in 1978. He is a photographer and graphic designer. He produces long-haul documentary projects, making the aesthetic choice of the contrasting and granular texture of film. Black and white photography enables him to focus on the image, interplay of light and framing, while evoking timelessness. Through his work, Simon Vansteenwinckel makes a major contribution to the effervescence of the Brussels photographic scene, which is a very lively and innovative today.

His subjects are diverse, ranging from an initiatory journey with his family to Chile and Argentina which spawned the book Nosotros (published by Yellow Now, 2018) to Platteland (Published by Home Frit’Home, 2019), a visual narrative of his wanderings in Belgium. Simon has already exhibited at the Museum of Photography at the time of the 17th Open National Photography Contest (9th December 2017 – 22nd April 2018) where he was awarded the Nikon Belux Prize.

His work is represented more particularly by the Modern Blocks and Calaveras galleries (Belgium). He is also the co-author of the books 1010 South Station (published by Le Mulet, 2018), Sauvage (published by Le Mulet, 2018), and 1010 Noordzee (published by Le Mulet, 2019). He has been a member of the editorial board of Halogénure magazine since 2016. Last but not least, Simon Vansteenwinckel is the co-founder of an independent publishing house specialising in photogra- phic books, Éditions Le Mulet, with the graphic designer and photographer Mathieu Van Assche.
