Justine Dofal. En Hiver, Le soleil part de bonne heure

A long-term investigation in a Brussels nursing home, this project is a photographic reflection on the loss, forgetfulness, loneliness, isolation and confinement of the elderly.

At an age when they have already lost much - sight, hearing, strength, memory, friends too - the residents of the Résidence Sainte-Gertrude are going through their last stage of life in the shadow of the rest of society, with no income and no family ties. Yet they still have a strong desire to tell, to pass on, to share and to live, come what may.

This project received the Out of the Box prize as part of the Prix Médiatine 24.

Justine Dofal is a French photographer based in Brussels. Influenced by her background in sociology and social action, her photography takes a critical approach to the subjects she tackles. Through portraits, documentary and participatory projects, she seeks to shift the gaze on sensitive social issues and put marginalized people back at the center of the image.

She graduated from the Agnès Varda School of Photography and Visual Techniques, Brussels, in December 2023, with first prize from the jury.
